Splashproof vs. Waterproof Sex Toys: What's the Difference?

You’ve just had a brilliant idea: it’s time to take your favorite sex toy out of the bedroom and into the bath. But as you’re about to take the plunge, you notice the box says “splashproof,” not “waterproof.” Now what? Is your brilliant idea about to become a very expensive mistake?

Yes, “splashproof” and “waterproof” are not the same thing. To save you from having to Google it mid-foreplay, we’re deep-diving into the wide, wet world of water-resistant toys. Let’s jump in.

The simple difference: can it be submerged?

At its core, the difference between waterproof and splashproof is simple:

  • A waterproof toy is fully submersible. You can safely take it in the shower, bath, pool, or hot tub.
  • A splashproof toy can handle getting a little wet — think light splashes or being cleaned with a damp cloth — but it cannot be submerged in water.

The expert difference: understanding IP ratings

So, how can you be sure? The answer is the Ingress Protection (IP) rating, which is the universal standard for how resistant a device is to water and dust. For sex toys, you'll mostly see a rating like "IPX7."

The "X" is a placeholder for a dust-resistance rating (which isn't very important for sex toys). The number that follows is the key. It tells you the level of water protection.

  • IPX4 (Splashproof): This is the rating for most splashproof toys. It means the toy is protected from splashing water from any direction. It can handle being rinsed for cleaning but should never be held under a running tap or submerged. Our Turbo Rabbit is a great example of a powerful, splashproof toy.
  • IPX7 (Waterproof): This is the gold standard for waterproof toys. It means the toy can be fully submerged in up to 1 meter (about 3 feet) of water for 30 minutes. Toys with this rating, like our entire Ultra Wand collection, are perfect for the bath or shower.
  • IPX8 (Waterproof+): This rating means the toy can be submerged deeper than 1 meter for longer periods. It’s less common but offers the highest level of water protection.

A quick comparison: what can you actually do with them?

Activity Splashproof (IPX4) Waterproof (IPX7)
Use in the shower ❌ No ✅ Yes
Use in the bath ❌ No ✅ Yes
Clean with a damp cloth ✅ Yes ✅ Yes
Rinse under a gentle tap ✅ Yes (with care) ✅ Yes
Submerge in water ❌ No ✅ Yes

How to clean them properly

Proper cleaning is essential, and it differs slightly for each type.

  • For Waterproof Toys: This is easy. You can wash them directly under warm running water with a good sex toy cleaner or gentle soap. You can even let them soak for a few minutes.
  • For Splashproof Toys: Be more careful. Never submerge them. The best way to clean them is to spray them with a toy cleaner and wipe them down thoroughly with a clean, damp cloth. Be extra cautious around charging ports and seams.

While many vibrating toys are fully waterproof these days, never assume. A small crack or break in a waterproof toy can compromise its seal, so always inspect your toys regularly. If you’re ever unsure, check the product’s specifications page for its IP rating. Knowing the difference between splashproof and waterproof not only protects your investment but also opens up a whole new world of aquatic adventures.
